The Flagston’s next-door neighbors, Irma and Thirsty  Thurston, don’t have any children.  Although they can’t truly comprehend the demands of parenthood, they have a genuine affection for Chip, Dot, Ditto and Trixie.

In the Sunday page above, Lois tells Irma how the kids feel about her.  It turns out to be a ploy to ask her to babysit.

Timeline – 2004 Part 3

Hi and Lois Sunday page digital proof, October 24, 2004.

The Sunday page above was published in newspapers nine days before the 2004 Presidential election in which incumbent Republican George W. Bush ran against Democratic challenger John Kerry.

Although there was intense political polarization during that election, it is nothing compared to the partisanship of today.  It seems like a more innocent time.

Religion is a subject that has to be treated very carefully in a comic strip.  Our readers come from many different backgrounds and we don’t want to offend anyone by making light of their beliefs.

Many people go to church on Sundays, so it seems like the Flagstons should as well, at least occasionally.  In the episode above, all the family members are participating in the service.
