Santa in Silvermine

I live in a neighborhood in Connecticut, known as “Silvermine,” where three towns – New Canaan, Wilton and Norwalk – meet. There was never any silver mined in the area but it has been home to many artists, some of whom founded the Silvermine Guild in 1922, now part of the Silvermine Arts Center. Another local landmark is the Silvermine Tavern, which opened in 1929 and is currently being renovated.

We continue our holiday-themed series with a Sunday page from 1996 in which Lois recites her recipe for a perfect family Christmas and Trixie adds the icing on the cake in the final panel.

If you look carefully at the wreath above the mantelpiece in the fourth panel you will see the faces of Joan and Dik Browne. Chance Browne often pays tribute to his parents in these seasonal strips.

How many shopping days until Christmas? Who is counting?

At this time of the year we explore all the traditional activities of the season in Hi and Lois – buying gifts, sending cards, selecting a tree, decorating the house, singing carols, cooking food, exchanging presents, celebrating the holiday and searching for inspiration.
