Soliciting rides from strangers, commonly know as hitchhiking, began as soon as automobiles started driving on highways.

Since 1970, there has been a decline in hitchhiking in the United States due to a number of factors, including lower airfares, more money for travel, numerous and reliable cars, and a lack of trust of strangers.

This is one of my favorite pages from the late 1990s.  It was reproduced in the 2005 book Hi and Lois Sunday Best.  The original art was also featured in the 2014 exhibition King of the Comics at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum in Columbus, Ohio and is now in their permanent collection.

Timeline – 1998 Part 1

Hi and Lois Sunday page digital proof, May 10, 1998.

When I was a teenager back in the 1960s, I used to go out on “dates.” Before I got my driver’s license this usually involved inviting a girl to meet me at a local movie theater or pizza place.  When I started driving, I could pick her up at her house and take her places, like restaurants, dances or parties.
