Tracy Twins Classic

The Tracy Twins by Dik Browne, January 1961.

As we have documented in previous posts, The Tracy Twins, which was illustrated by Dik Browne, made its debut in the October 1953 issue of Boys’ Life magazine, one year before Hi and Lois started in newspapers on October 18, 1954. It was written and designed by Al Stenzel, an art director at the Johnstone and Cushing agency. Dik drew the feature for almost twenty years before he turned it over to other artists in the early 1970s.

We continue our holiday-themed series with a Sunday page from 1996 in which Lois recites her recipe for a perfect family Christmas and Trixie adds the icing on the cake in the final panel.

If you look carefully at the wreath above the mantelpiece in the fourth panel you will see the faces of Joan and Dik Browne. Chance Browne often pays tribute to his parents in these seasonal strips.

At this time of the year we explore all the traditional activities of the season in Hi and Lois – buying gifts, sending cards, selecting a tree, decorating the house, singing carols, cooking food, exchanging presents, celebrating the holiday and searching for inspiration.
