Ditto Flagston is seven years old and comes up with more ways to get in trouble than Lois can shake her finger at. Nevertheless, he’s a lovable little monster. His naïve innocence gives him a winning charm. He is a kid without any adult pretensions who recaptures a sense of fun most of us lost with our youth.

Timeline – 1967 Part 4

Hi and Lois Sunday page color proof, December 3, 1967.

In anticipation of the upcoming football season, we are featuring this classic Sunday page. Hi, Chip and Ditto are shown going to what appears to be a college game. The pennants identify the institution only as “State.”

The gag revolves around Chip questioning his younger brother about his knowledge of the game. Ditto responds by detailing the rules of touch football he plays with his friends in the backyard. The boundaries include rose bushes and the driveway. There are also allowances for do-overs. This satisfies Chip who probably follows similar guidelines with his group of pals. It is nice to see Ditto get some respect from his older brother.

Timeline – 1967 Part 2

Hi and Lois Sunday page color proof, March 12, 1967.

In this classic episode, Trixie reviews the events of her day while she is trying to fall asleep. Among the many pleasurable experiences she had were finding jelly beans behind the couch, playing peek-a-boo with the postman, looking in the window of a toy store and curling up with Dawg. In six consecutive thought balloons these activities are recreated in cute drawings showing Trixie in various situations. Her positive mood is disrupted in the final panel when she remembers the unpleasant shot she got at the doctor’s. This type of gag has a rhythm that builds toward the surprise ending.
