Timeline – 1965 Part 2

Certain gags require secondary characters, like extras in movies, who are not part of the main cast. In the Sunday page above, Dik Browne created some friends for Ditto who look like child actors from the Our Gang comedies transported to the 1960s. Did the boy with the black eye get punched in a fight? Why does the other one look like he works on a train? We’ll never know, because these nameless characters only appeared in this episode.

This classic Sunday page from 1964 shows Lois Flagston on a trip to town. She is dressed in an attractive red dress with pearls, white gloves and a stylish hat. Her friend Millie admires her for looking so fresh and calm while planning a large lunch party at the same time her home is being renovated. With Hi’s help, Lois is regarded by her peers as a super capable suburban housewife.

Timeline – 1964 Part 1

Hi and Lois Sunday page color proof, January 26, 1964.

Hi and Thirsty are best buddies and next-door neighbors. They’ve known each other since childhood. They work in the same office, take a bus home together and complain to each other about their problems.

This classic episode features many aspects of their relationship. At first Hi is sympathetic to Thirsty’s griping. But he eventually has to give Thirsty a reality check about how easy he has it. Hi describes life in the “olden days” as being much harder. Thirsty has a different picture of the past. He’s not completely wrong. Primitive hunter-gatherers did work less than modern office workers, but their life expectancy was much shorter.  Women were just as important in the division of labor as they are today.
