Timeline – 1967 Part 4

In anticipation of the upcoming football season, we are featuring this classic Sunday page. Hi, Chip and Ditto are shown going to what appears to be a college game. The pennants identify the institution only as “State.”

The gag revolves around Chip questioning his younger brother about his knowledge of the game. Ditto responds by detailing the rules of touch football he plays with his friends in the backyard. The boundaries include rose bushes and the driveway. There are also allowances for do-overs. This satisfies Chip who probably follows similar guidelines with his group of pals. It is nice to see Ditto get some respect from his older brother.

Hi and Lois Sunday page, November 5, 1978.

The Sunday page above is another superlative example of Dik Browne’s pen-and-ink technique and compositional skills. He added depth to his panels by providing background details like clouds and church steeples and his use of blacks throughout the page give a balanced look to the overall layout. The incidental characters are humorously drawn and distinctive. The evocative silhouetting in the second-to-last panel helps to set up the final punch line.

Super Bowl

Are you more than ready for some football?  The two-week build up to the big game tends to inflate the importance of the event.  After hours and hours of endless analysis the players and spectators are understandably anxious for the contest to begin.  Although there have been some memorable match-ups and last-minute heroics, the game itself is often disappointing.
