The first few weeks of school can be exciting for students. I can recall the anticipation of finding out which of my friends were in my classes, sizing up my teachers and seeing if there were any new faces. Although there was always a possibility for unpleasant surprises, my feelings about the new school year were generally positive.

Tonight is the opening ceremony for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Twenty years ago, the Sunday page above was done during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

At this time, I had been reading the comic strip Rose is Rose by Pat Brady. I noticed that the married couple in the strip, Rose and Jimbo Gumbo, had a strong physical attraction to each other. Rose often teased Jimbo in a playfully sexual way.

This Sunday page appeared in newspapers long before kids had video games and computers to play with. In the early 1960s, Dot and Ditto didn’t know what they were missing. They had a console television to watch, a phonograph for listening to records and many traditional toys, including a ball, a jack-in-the-box, blocks, a ring-toss game and a spinning saucer.
